Josh pushed off from the side of the pool and started to swim. He loved the water and was already learning the different types of strokes and methods of swimming. When he got to the other side, he was tired, but turned around and swam to the other side again. “That’s great for your first lesson, Josh,” his instructor said, “and let me show you a few points that’ll make it easier for you. When you swim, I noticed that you’re looking straight in front of you. That’s a great idea for when you’re walking and riding your bicycle, but in swimming, it’s not always the best. You want to get your body parallel with the surface of the water to double your efficiency. The best thing you can do is put your head in the water while you swim. Otherwise, you’re just slowing yourself down. It’s difficult at first, but soon it will be the new normal.”
The commitment you make to your goals is evident in how aggressively you go after them. There are so many distractions out there and excuses not to succeed, that it can seem normal to slow yourself down. Sometimes it seems like a good idea to keep your head up and away from your objective while you look around for obstacles and distractions. If you want to thrive in your dream, maybe the best thing you can do is put your head in the water. Submerge yourself in your dreams and let that be what drives you to do everything else. Otherwise, you’re just slowing yourself down. It’s difficult at first, but soon it will be the new normal.
